Pool excavation costs on the Gold Coast in 2026
Most pool digs — fibreglass or concrete — run $3,500–$7,000 for the excavation, depending on size and rock, plus around $2,000 for spoil removal (cart-away). Tight-access blocks and rocky or hinterland blocks around Tallai, Mudgeeraba and Bonogin sit at the top of the range, with heavy basalt quoted as a separate line. Those are honest guide ranges — the real number comes from a free site visit, never a lowball phone quote. What moves it:
- Pool size and shape — a plunge pool is a very different dig to a full family pool.
- Access — a 900mm side gate means a smaller machine and more spoil runs.
- Rock — priced as a separate, clear line so it's never a surprise.
- Spoil volume and cartage distance to a licensed recycling depot.
- Pool type — concrete, fibreglass and shotcrete each need slightly different set-out.
You deal with John from quote to handover. After a free site visit you get a written, itemised price — machine time, carting and any rock all laid out — so there are no end-of-job surprises.

Tight-access pool digs: getting a machine into the back yard
Most Gold Coast pools sit in the back yard, and most back yards weren't built for a big machine. Our 1.7T mini fits a standard 900mm side gate and runs on rubber tracks that are gentle on pavers and lawns — so we regularly dig pools on blocks bigger crews turned down. If access is the thing worrying you, our dedicated tight-access excavation page explains exactly how we check and protect the route in.
- 1.7T mini through a standard 900mm gate, tracks retracted.
- Sub-900mm access solved with a 1.0T micro or a crane-in lift.
- Ply and mats to protect pavers, driveways and existing surfaces.
- Spoil staged at the front and carted out in our own tipper.
Rock, sand and the Gold Coast ground
Where your pool is going changes how it digs. In the hinterland, rock is common — blocks around Tallai and Mudgeeraba often need a breaker, and our rocky-block pool dig in Tallai shows what that involves and why we quote rock separately.
Closer to the coast the challenge flips: sandy, unstable ground that wants to collapse back into the hole. Our sandy coastal pool dig at Burleigh Heads walks through how we manage a batter that won't hold, so the excavation stays safe and true to shape for the builder.
Working with your pool builder — or as an owner-builder
We have ongoing relationships with several Gold Coast pool builders and coordinate the dig directly with them — set-out from the plans, dig to shape and depth, hand-trim to spec, and hand the hole over clean and on-level ready for steel and shotcrete. If you're an owner-builder, we work with you exactly the same way, and we're happy to talk through what the builder will need from the excavation before they arrive.
- Set-out from your builder's plans and levels.
- Dig to shape, depth and fall, then hand-trim to tolerance.
- Over-dig allowance for steel, formwork and shotcrete where required.
- Clean handover so the next trade can start without re-working the hole.
Removing an old pool as well
Reclaiming the back yard? We demolish and remove old concrete and fibreglass pools, cart the debris away, then backfill and compact the void so the area's ready to reinstate as lawn, a shed pad or a new build. We can quote a removal and a new dig together if you're replacing one pool with another. For what a removal typically costs, see our pool demolition cost guide.
Why Gold Coast clients book us for pool excavation gold coast
Our 1.7T mini fits standard 900mm gates. We've dug pools on Gold Coast blocks other contractors said couldn't be done.
On rocky and hinterland blocks we quote rock breaking as a clear hourly line — no end-of-job invoice shock.
We run our own tipper, so removing the dirt to a licensed recycling depot is quoted as its own clear line (usually around $2,000) — never a hidden add-on.
Set-out, dig, levels and handover coordinated directly with your pool builder — or owner-builder direct.
Pool Excavation Gold Coast — suburbs we cover

Pool Excavation Gold Coast — common questions
How much does pool excavation cost on the Gold Coast?+
Most pool digs — fibreglass or concrete — run $3,500–$7,000 for the excavation, depending on size and rock, plus around $2,000 for spoil removal (cart-away). Tight-access and rocky or hinterland blocks (Tallai, Mudgeeraba, Bonogin) sit at the top of the range, with heavy basalt quoted as a separate line. We give you a fixed written price after a free site visit — no lowball phone quotes.
Can you dig a pool with tight side access?+
Yes — tight access is our specialty. Our 1.7T mini excavator fits a standard 900mm side gate and runs on rubber tracks that are gentle on pavers and lawns. For sub-900mm access we arrange a smaller machine or a crane-in lift.
Do you cart the dirt away?+
Yes. We run our own tipper, so spoil removal to a licensed recycling depot is handled for you — quoted as its own clear line (usually around $2,000 for a typical pool) so you know exactly what it costs, with no separate truck to organise.
What happens if you hit rock during the dig?+
On known rocky blocks we factor likely rock into the original quote. Elsewhere we quote rock as a separate, clearly priced hourly line, and we always talk to you before the meter starts — no surprises.
Do you work directly with pool builders?+
Yes — we have ongoing relationships with several Gold Coast pool builders and coordinate set-out, dig, depth, levels and handover directly with them. We also work owner-builder direct.
Can you remove an old pool as well?+
Yes — we demolish and remove old concrete and fibreglass pools, then cart the debris away and backfill and compact the void so the area's ready to reinstate. We can quote a removal and a new dig together.
