Rock Breaking vs Excavation: When You Need Each on the Gold Coast — Sollid Solutions Gold Coast

On the Gold Coast you can roughly split residential ground into three types: sandy coastal soil, clay through the foothills, and rocky shale or basalt through the hinterland. Standard excavation handles the first two. Rock — actual hard rock, not just stiff clay — needs a hydraulic breaker.

How to tell if you'll need rock breaking

  • Your block is in the hinterland (Tallai, Bonogin, Mudgeeraba, Worongary, Reedy Creek, Currumbin Valley)
  • Visible rock outcrops on the lot or neighbouring lots
  • Geotech report mentions weathered shale, basalt, sandstone or 'refusal'
  • Neighbours' builds had cost variations for rock
  • The block was previously cut and you're going deeper

Coastal blocks (Burleigh, Palm Beach, Mermaid Waters, Broadbeach Waters, Hope Island) almost never hit hard rock — sandy soil all the way down to the water table.

What rock breaking actually involves

We swap the bucket on the excavator for a hydraulic rock breaker — a heavy chisel that hammers the rock at high frequency until it fractures. The broken rock is then loaded out with the bucket. It's louder and slower than digging — typically 20-40% the speed of normal excavation in the same volume.

Cost difference: digging vs breaking

  • Standard excavation: roughly $150–250/hr depending on machine size
  • Excavation with rock breaker: typically $200–320/hr
  • Rock breaks at 0.5–2m³/hour depending on rock type
  • Soft soils dig at 8–15m³/hour for comparison

That's why a rock-affected pool dig can cost double a sandy-soil dig of the same volume.

When to break, when to dig around it

If a project hits a small rock pocket, sometimes the cheapest answer is a slight design change — bumping the slab up 100mm, or moving a footing 300mm. We've saved homeowners thousands by spotting these options at the site visit. The bigger the design freedom, the more options we have.

Free site visit before quoting rock

We never quote rock work over the phone. A 20-minute site visit lets us spot likely rock zones and quote you a realistic range — much better than a guess.

Common rock-breaking jobs we do on the Gold Coast

  • Pool excavation in hinterland suburbs
  • House site cuts on rocky lots
  • Trenching for services through rock
  • Pool demolition (breaking up old concrete shells)
  • Driveway and retaining cuts on sloping rock blocks
