Pool Excavation in Burleigh Heads: Sandy Coastal Ground & Fast Digging — Sollid Solutions Gold Coast

After working all over the Gold Coast — from rocky Tallai ridges to tight Robina suburban blocks — Burleigh Heads is one of the easier places to dig a pool. Most of the suburb sits on deep sandy coastal soils that excavate fast and cleanly, so a lot of Burleigh pool digs are a one-day job. That said, some blocks — especially on the higher ground toward West Burleigh — do hit rock, and when they do we bring a hydraulic breaker. See our Gold Coast pool excavation overview for how coastal digs compare to rocky hinterland blocks.

Why most Burleigh digs are quick

Burleigh Heads is part of the Gold Coast's coastal plain — millennia of sand deposits, so on most blocks there's little rock near the surface. A 5T excavator slides through that sand at maybe 5-8 times the speed of working through Tallai basalt. But 'mostly sand' isn't 'never rock' — some Burleigh blocks, particularly on the higher ground and closer to West Burleigh, do hit rock or hard bands part-way down. If yours does, we quote the rock breaking as a separate line so you always know what you're paying for.

The trade-off — and there's always a trade-off — is groundwater. Some lower-lying Burleigh streets (closer to Tallebudgera Creek, parts of West Burleigh) sit on a relatively shallow water table. Dig deep enough and you can hit groundwater seeping into the hole, especially after rain. We plan for it.

What a typical Burleigh pool dig looks like

  1. Morning — Machine on site, tracking down, pool marked from plans, dig begins
  2. Late morning to early afternoon — Full excavation to depth, spoil out to tipper via dumper or directly
  3. Afternoon — Box out for shell, site clean, photo handover
  4. Most standard Burleigh pool digs: completed in a single day

Burleigh Heads pool excavation cost in 2026

  • Standard 8m × 4m pool dig (excavation only): $3,500 – $4,800
  • Same pool with shallow groundwater: $4,000 – $5,500 (extra time for water management)
  • Tight access through narrow side gate: add $800 – $1,500
  • Larger family pool (10m+): $5,000 – $7,000
  • Rock or hard bands: rock breaking added as a separate hourly line

Most Burleigh pool digs run $3,500 to around $7,000 (excavation only) depending on size and whether we hit rock — spoil removal is quoted separately, though clean Burleigh sand often has resale value that offsets the tip fees.

The one thing to watch — groundwater

If your Burleigh block is in a lower-lying area (under 5m elevation), there's a chance we hit groundwater partway through the dig. This isn't a disaster but it does need managing:

  • Pump-out during the dig to keep the hole working
  • Sometimes a sump pit at the deep end with continuous pumping
  • Shell installer may need to weight the shell against buoyancy
  • Backfill specification may change to free-draining gravel rather than spoil

We'll spot the risk at the site visit — soil colour, neighbours' experience, position relative to known wet areas all give us clues. Worst case adds maybe $1,000-$2,000 to the dig cost.

What about Burleigh's salt air and corrosion?

It affects the long-term lifespan of pool plant and fittings but doesn't really change the excavation. We do recommend any in-ground services we touch (drainage, conduits) are spec'd with galvanised or PVC components rather than mild steel, but that's a pool plumber's call.

Spoil disposal from Burleigh

Clean Burleigh sand is in demand — landscape suppliers and builders sometimes want it as fill or topsoil base. We can often divert clean spoil to a buyer rather than the tip, which saves you a few hundred dollars in tip fees. Worth asking about at the quote stage.

Quick comparison — Burleigh vs Tallai vs Robina

  • Burleigh Heads: usually 1 day, $3,500-$7,000, mostly easy sandy soil (occasional rock or groundwater)
  • Robina: 1.5-2 days, $3,500-$6,500, easy soil, tight access common
  • Tallai: 3-5 days, $7,500-$16,000, rock breaking required

If you've been quoted on a Burleigh dig and the price feels high, get a second opinion. On most Burleigh blocks the sandy ground does the work for us, so the dig shouldn't be expensive — the main things that push a price up here are rock and groundwater, and we'll flag either at the site visit.
