Rock Breaking Gold Coast — Sollid Solutions

ROCK BREAKING — GOLD COAST & BRISBANE

Hard rock is everywhere in the Gold Coast hinterland — Tallai, Mudgeeraba, Bonogin, Worongary, Reedy Creek and the surrounding areas all sit on basalt or sandstone that stops standard excavators dead. Our excavators run hydraulic rock breakers built for this work, and our operators know how to get through the rock without trashing the surrounding ground.

We're often called in after another contractor has quoted a job and bailed out when they hit rock. Bring us in early, get an honest assessment, and avoid the surprises mid-project. Most coastal blocks (Palm Beach, Hope Island, Broadbeach Waters) rarely need rock breaking — sandy soil most of the way down to the water table — but even Burleigh throws up the occasional rocky block, so we never assume a coastal address means no rock.

Rock breaking is slower than standard excavation — usually 0.5–2m³ per hour vs 8–15m³ per hour for soft soils. That's why a rock-affected pool dig can cost double a sandy-soil dig of the same volume. We size the breaker to the excavator: a 5T machine with a matched breaker handles most residential rock; for larger commercial rock we bring in bigger gear by arrangement.

Cost difference matters and we're upfront about it. Standard excavation typically runs $150–250/hr depending on machine size. Excavation with the rock breaker fitted moves to $200–320/hr. Rock breaks at 0.5–2m³/hour vs 8–15m³/hour for soft digging — that's where the real cost difference comes from. We quote rock as a separate line so you know what you're paying for.

Common rock-breaking jobs we do across the Gold Coast: pool excavation in hinterland suburbs, house site cuts on rocky lots, trenching for services through rock, pool demolition (breaking up old concrete shells), and driveway and retaining cuts on sloping rock blocks.

Sometimes the cheapest answer is a slight design change. Bumping the slab up 100mm or moving a footing 300mm can avoid hours of rock breaking. We look for these options at the site visit — a small design tweak can save you thousands. The bigger your design freedom, the more options we have.
