We break holes in the pool floor for drainage, knock the top metre of walls in, and backfill the cavity with engineered fill. It's the cheaper option and works for most backyards — but the land can never be built on (you can't put a slab over a buried pool).
Full demolition
The whole pool shell is broken up and trucked off site, the hole is engineered-filled and compacted in layers, and the ground is certifiable for future building. More expensive but the only option if you ever want to extend the house, build a shed, or sell to a buyer who wants development potential.
If you're keeping the backyard as garden or grass forever — partial fill saves you thousands. If there's any chance you'll build over it (or your buyer might), spend the extra and go full removal.
What drives pool demolition cost
1. Pool size and construction type
Concrete pools are slow and noisy — heaps of jackhammering. Fibreglass shells crack out fast (sometimes one day) but you still pay for cart-away of the pieces and proper backfill.
2. Access
Same as a pool excavation but in reverse — we need to get the broken concrete OUT. Tight access means smaller machines, more wheelbarrows, more days. A 900mm side gate is workable; anything narrower we discuss alternatives at the site visit.
3. Backfill quality (this is where dodgy operators cut corners)
Cheap quotes use whatever spoil they can get — sometimes the demolished pool itself, broken up. That fails compaction tests and settles for years. Proper backfill is engineered material (recycled concrete aggregate or road base) compacted in 200–300mm layers with a roller. Always ask: 'What's the backfill material and what compaction test will you provide?'
4. Council requirements
Gold Coast Council requires demolition approval for in-ground pool removal. The pool register also needs updating. Your demolition contractor should handle the certifier paperwork — if they don't, you do, and the new title can flag the un-removed pool when you sell.
