Pool Excavation in Tallai: What to Expect on Rocky Acreage Blocks — Sollid Solutions Gold Coast

Tallai is one of the prettiest acreage suburbs on the Gold Coast — and one of the toughest for pool excavation. The suburb sits on a basalt ridge, and unlike sandy coastal suburbs where the digger slides through the dirt, almost every Tallai pool dig involves breaking rock. If you're planning a pool on a Tallai block, this is what you actually need to know — and how it fits into pool excavation across the Gold Coast.

Why Tallai blocks are different

Most of Tallai sits on weathered basalt — a dense volcanic rock that ranges from heavily fractured (relatively easy to break) to massive solid bedrock (very slow going). Across the dozens of Tallai jobs we've done, we'd say 9 out of 10 pool digs encountered some rock; about half required a full day or more of dedicated rock breaking.

The implication: you can't quote a Tallai pool dig honestly without a site visit. Anyone giving you a phone quote here is guessing, and you'll get caught by a variation later.

What a typical Tallai pool dig actually looks like

  1. Day 1 — Site setup, fencing, soil/topsoil strip, pool outline marked from plans
  2. Day 2 — Begin excavation with standard 5T machine, working through topsoil and weathered surface material
  3. Day 2-4 — Switch to hydraulic rock breaker as basalt is hit, working in layers, removing rock spoil as we go
  4. Day 4-5 — Final dig to engineer's depth, box out for shell, site clean and handover photos

A non-rocky pool dig at the coast can be done in a day. Tallai jobs typically run 3-5 days because of the rock breaking involved. Plan your build timeline accordingly.

Tallai pool excavation cost in 2026

  • Excavation on a Tallai block runs $3,500 – $7,000, and rocky Tallai blocks sit at the top of that range once breaking is factored in
  • Spoil removal (cart-away) is usually around $2,000 on top — though broken basalt can often be reused on site to save on it
  • Heavy solid bedrock or difficult steep-block access is quoted as its own line at the site visit, so a big rock job is priced honestly rather than guessed

Compare that to a sandy Burleigh Waters block, where the dig sits at the lower end of the range, and you can see why Tallai owners should budget toward the top and expect a separate rock line. The rock isn't a surcharge — it's the actual cost of the work.

Common Tallai pool excavation questions

Can the rock spoil stay on site?

Often yes — broken basalt makes excellent fill for low areas, retaining backfill, or rough driveway base. Re-using the spoil on site can save $2,000-$4,000 in tip fees and haulage. Worth discussing at the site visit.

What size machine do you bring to Tallai?

Almost always a 5T tracked excavator with hydraulic rock breaker attachment. For very tight access (side gates under 1.2m) we can run a 1.7T machine but the dig takes considerably longer in rock — usually not worth it unless there's no alternative.

Can you handle the steep Tallai view blocks?

Yes — we do steep blocks regularly. The combination of slope and rock requires proper benching, machine spotting and sometimes temporary access tracks. We plan all of that at the site visit before mobilising.
