Sloping blocks are the Gold Coast hinterland reality. Tallai, Mudgeeraba, Bonogin, Currumbin Valley, Worongary, Reedy Creek, Springbrook — almost every block has a fall across it, and many have a 1-in-4 (25%) drop or steeper. Building a level house, shed or pool on that ground takes more than a bobcat operator with a sense of optimism.
We bench sloping blocks to engineer's drawings. That means a high-side cut into the bank, a low-side fill or retaining wall, drainage routed around the new pad, and a finished platform within tolerance for the slab crew to roll straight onto. Most sloping block jobs combine three trades' worth of dirt work — cut, fill, retaining trench — into one efficient visit.
Cut volume on a sloping block is often double what owner-builders expect. A 12m × 8m flat house pad on a 15% slope produces around 60–90m³ of cut. On a 25% slope the same pad produces 120–180m³ of cut. Spoil management — where it goes, what the tip fees are, whether any can be used as fill on the low side — is the single biggest cost lever.
Retaining walls almost always come with sloping-block work. We build retaining walls up to 1 metre in the same visit as the bench cut. For taller engineered walls we dig the footing trench — usually 600mm wide × 600–900mm deep, footing-engineered — which saves you a second mobilisation and means the wall installer rolls in onto a clean trench within tolerance, and we coordinate directly with your retaining wall builder.
Drainage on a sloping block is mandatory and easy to get wrong. Surface water from above the cut can wash out a freshly benched pad in one storm. We route a cut-off drain (ag-line in gravel) above the high side, route surface water around the pad, and drop it to a stormwater pit or absorption trench downhill. Done as part of the dirt work, not as an afterthought.
Hinterland sloping blocks almost always come with rock. Tallai basalt, Mudgeeraba sandstone, Bonogin bushrock — we run a 5T excavator with a hydraulic breaker rated for the rock you're likely to hit. We size the breaker to the rock, not the other way around. Rock is quoted as a clearly separate hourly line so you know exactly what you're paying for.
Council and engineering on sloping blocks: most cuts deeper than 1m or with retaining walls higher than 1m need engineered drawings. Your builder usually arranges these, and we work to them. If you're owner-building, we can refer you to engineers we work with regularly.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Site assessment with photographs, slope measurement and rock indicators
- Bench cut to engineer's pad spec
- Retaining wall trench excavation in the same visit
- Cut-off drain and stormwater routing above and around the pad
- Spoil reuse on low side where engineer permits — saves money
- Surplus spoil tipped to recycling facility
- Final pad trim and certification photos
HOW THE JOB RUNS
- 1
Engineering review
We work to your engineer's pad and retaining drawings. If you don't have them, we can refer you to engineers we use regularly.
- 2
Bench cut
High-side cut to engineer's level. Soil hauled or transferred to low side per engineer's fill spec.
- 3
Retaining wall trench
Trenched in the same visit. Wall installer rolls in onto a clean trench, saves a mobilisation.
- 4
Drainage
Cut-off drain on high side, surface water routed around pad, ag-line to absorption trench or stormwater pit.
- 5
Final trim
Pad trimmed to tolerance for the slab crew. Photos for engineer / builder records.
COMMON USES
- House pad bench cuts on sloping land
- Pool platform benching on hinterland blocks
- Shed and granny flat slab platforms
- Driveway cuts on steep entries
- Split-level slab preparation
- Retaining wall trench preparation
- Drainage routing and cut-off drains
Pricing Guide
Sloping block bench cut $4,500–$15,000 depending on cut volume, rock and retaining trench length. Free site visit and detailed quote — every sloping block is different, so no honest contractor will price one over the phone.
