Horse arenas are one of the trickier jobs in earthmoving — get the base wrong and you're rebuilding it within 2 years. Get the drainage wrong and the arena floods every Gold Coast wet season. Get the surface profile wrong and your horse's joints pay the price. We've built dressage, jumping and training arenas across the Gold Coast hinterland and acreage zones, and we know what works.
A standard dressage arena is 60m × 20m = 1,200m² of perfectly level base. A jumping arena is typically 60m × 30m = 1,800m². Training arenas vary. Whatever the size, the base build is the same: site cut to engineered level, cut-off drain on the high side, geo-fabric layer, road base sub-base compacted in 100mm lifts, drainage rock layer, geo-fabric again, then the riding surface (sand, fibre-blended sand, or a sand/rubber composite).
Drainage is the single most important part of an arena build. The Gold Coast gets summer rain in serious quantities, and an arena that doesn't drain is unusable for weeks at a time. We grade the base with a 1% cross-fall to a stormwater connection, install a perimeter ag-line drain, and use drainage rock and geo-fabric in the build-up so water moves through the surface and out. Done right, the arena is rideable within 24 hours of a 100mm dump.
The riding surface is the bit owners spend the most time choosing. Standard washed silica sand is cheap and works fine for most disciplines but compacts hard over time. Fibre-blended sand (sand + chopped synthetic fibre) gives consistent cushioning and lasts longer. Sand/rubber composite is the top tier — used for FEI dressage and high-level showjumping. We've installed all three and we'll talk you through the trade-offs.
Cost varies a lot with site conditions. A flat coastal block (Pimpama, Coomera, Ormeau) with good drainage and easy truck access is the cheapest scenario — typically $35,000–$55,000 for a standard 60×20 dressage arena. A sloping hinterland block (Tallai, Mudgeeraba, Bonogin) with rock or major cut-and-fill needed can run $65,000–$110,000+. Always priced after a site visit.
We coordinate with arena specialists for the surface installation if you want a fibre-blend or rubber composite — those products come from suppliers we know and the install is half-day work once the base is ready. For straight washed silica sand, we deliver and grade it ourselves in the same job.

- Site cut to engineered level (typically 60×20m or 60×30m)
- Cut-off drain on high side (sloping blocks)
- Geo-fabric base layer
- Road base sub-base compacted in 100mm lifts
- Drainage rock layer
- Perimeter ag-line drain to stormwater connection
- Riding surface delivery and grade (washed silica sand)
- Final dressage marker corner pegs and edge rail prep
HOW THE JOB RUNS
- 1
Site visit & layout
We walk the block, mark the arena footprint, check fall, drainage and access.
- 2
Site cut
Cut to engineered level. Spoil reused on the block where possible.
- 3
Drainage
Cut-off drain, perimeter ag-line, stormwater connection. Done right the first time.
- 4
Sub-base build
Geo-fabric, road base in 100mm lifts compacted, drainage rock, geo-fabric again.
- 5
Surface install
Washed silica sand delivered and graded. Or coordinate fibre-blend / rubber composite installer.
COMMON USES
- Dressage arenas (60m × 20m)
- Jumping arenas (60m × 30m, larger)
- Training and lunge arenas
- Round yards
- Stable yard prep
- Wash bay and tie-up area construction
- Track and laneway construction on equestrian properties
