The short version

On the Gold Coast in 2026, a typical residential pool dig runs $3,500 – $7,000 for the excavation itself — fibreglass or concrete — plus around $2,000 to cart the spoil away, so most jobs land around $5,500 – $9,000 all up. The two biggest variables are what's in the ground (sand, clay, fill, or rock) and how easy it is to get to (truck access, fence removal, slope). Heavy hinterland rock or canal-front dewatering is quoted as a separate line.

Typical 2026 price ranges

Site typeExcavation range (dig only)Days on site
Sand / soft fill, good access$3,500 – $4,5001 – 2
Clay, moderate access$4,500 – $6,0002 – 3
Mixed / heavy clay, tight access$5,500 – $7,0002 – 4
Rock present (breaker required)$6,000 – $7,000 + rock line3 – 6+

Ranges are for the excavation itself on a standard 8m × 4m fibreglass or concrete pool. Spoil removal (cart-away) adds around $2,000, and heavy solid rock or canal-front dewatering is quoted as a separate line. Bigger pools, lap pools, and infinity edges scale up.

What's actually in your quote

  • Excavator hire (wet — operator + machine) — usually a 5t or 8t machine, charged hourly or as a day rate.
  • Tipper truck cartage — removing spoil to a landfill or fill site. Charged per load. A typical pool produces 10–25 loads.
  • Tip fees — what you pay the dump or fill site to take the spoil. Clean clay/sand = cheap. Mixed material = expensive.
  • Float / mobilisation — sometimes a separate line item to truck the machine to your site.
  • Rock breaker hire — only if rock is found. Typically $1,200 – $2,400 per day on top of the excavator.

The 3 hidden cost traps

Trap 1: "Rock not included"

Many quotes say "if rock is encountered, additional charges apply" — without telling you what those charges are. Always ask for the rock breaker day rate in writing before the dig starts.

Trap 2: Spoil left on-site

Cheap quotes sometimes price for "spoil retained on site" — meaning the excavated dirt becomes your problem. Make sure cart-away is quoted as its own clear line (usually around $2,000) unless you genuinely have somewhere to use the fill.

Trap 3: Fence removal & reinstatement

If your access requires removing a panel of fence, that's usually NOT in the dig quote. Get clarity on who's lifting it out and who's putting it back.

5 questions to ask every pool excavation quote

  1. Is cart-away included? — and if so, how many loads is that priced for?
  2. What's your rock breaker day rate if rock is found?
  3. Are you insured — public liability + workers comp?
  4. Who's responsible if a service is hit (water, gas, NBN)? Have you done a Dial Before You Dig?
  5. What's the call-out / minimum charge if the job stops for weather or services?

How to know if you've got rock on the Gold Coast

  • Look at your neighbours — if there's rock retaining walls or rocky ground exposed, you've likely got it too.
  • Hinterland suburbs (Mudgeeraba, Tallai, Bonogin, Worongary, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera Valley) — assume rock until proven otherwise.
  • Coastal/canal suburbs (Mermaid Waters, Broadbeach Waters, Robina) — usually sand and clay, rare rock.
  • If unsure, a soil test (~$400) before quoting saves thousands in surprises.

How long does a pool dig take?

For a standard residential pool with reasonable access:

  • Day 1: Set up, mark out, remove fence panel, start digging.
  • Day 2: Finish dig, trim shape, profile bottom.
  • Day 3 (if needed): Final trimming, hand-cleanup, ready for steel/shell.

Add 1–3 days if rock is involved.

How John quotes a pool dig — straight up

Here's exactly how I do it:

  1. Free site visit — I'll come look at the access, soil, fall, and surrounding services. Usually 20 minutes.
  2. Written quote within 24 hours — itemised: dig + cart + tip fees + (rock day rate if applicable).
  3. No cart-away surprises — I price for the actual loads I'll need, not a vague guess.
  4. No "if rock" mystery — I tell you the day rate up-front, and we agree before the breaker comes off the truck.
  5. One number to call. The owner. Not a sales rep, not a foreman. Me.
