Project Scope

60m × 30m horse arena pad — strip, level, base layer, drainage, and surfacing prep.

The Challenge

Large flat pad in a property that drained naturally to one corner. Arena needed positive drainage in two directions plus a perforated drain spine to keep the surface dry through wet seasons.

How We Approached It

  1. 1
Topsoil stripped from full 1,800m² area
  2. 2
Bulk cut to subgrade with crown for drainage fall
  3. 3
    Geofabric laid over compacted subgrade
  4. 4
Perforated agi-line drain spine installed with surrounding 20-40mm RCA
  5. 5
Compacted road base layer 100mm deep
  6. 6
    Final trim to surface-contractor's tolerance
Equipment Used
  • 5T excavator
  • Bulldozer for shaping
  • Roller compactor
  • Laser level
Materials Handled

210m³ topsoil stockpiled for paddock topdressing

Outcome

Arena pad to design spec, ready for the surface contractor. Owner riding within the month.

Key Takeaways

  • Drainage planning at the start saves a wet, unrideable arena later
  • Stockpiling topsoil for paddock use was a real value-add for the owner
  • Roller compaction in lifts gives the surface a stable, long-lasting base
